Description
A book describing the author's experiences during the first few days of the Great War, notably during the battle for Ethe in Belgium near to the French border north of Verdun. What the book shows is how unready the French forces were to fight a mechanised machine-gun orientated war using a methodology based on the tactics of the Franco-Prussian War some 40 years earlier. As a writer of military history, Grasset describes his initiation into 20th century warfare in all too graphic detail - an initiation that left him scarred both mentally and physically. The final chapter of the book tells of German atrocities during the German advance into Belgium around the Ethe-Gomery area.
